फोटो.सर्कल ग्राण्ट २०२०

नेपालमा रहेका फोटोग्राफर, पत्रकार र मल्टिमिडिया कथावाचकहरुलाई यो महामारीको दौरान कोभिड १९ को असर र प्रतिक्रियाहरुबारे बताउन र त्यसको दस्तावेज बनाउन सहयोगका उद्देश्यले १० साना अनुदानको घोषणा गर्न पाउँदा फोटो सर्कल उत्साहित छ । आर्थिक सहयोगका साथै, अनुदान प्राप्त गर्नुहुने महानुभावहरुलाई अनुसन्धान र सम्पादकीय सहयोग समेत प्रदान गरिने छ र कृषि, जनस्वास्थ्य, शिक्षा लगायत अन्य क्षेत्रका प्रबुद्ध व्यक्ति तथा बिज्ञहरुसँग सहकार्य गर्न प्रोत्साहित गरिनेछ । अनुदान प्राप्त गर्नुहुने महानुभावहरुले नेपाल फोटो प्रोजेक्ट, फोटो सर्कल द्घारा संचालित एक भिजुवल रिपोर्टाज प्ल्याटफर्ममा र अन्य स्थानीय मिडिया आउटलेटहरुमा आफ्ना सामाग्रीहरु प्रकाशित गर्न पाउनुहुनेछ ।

हामी आशा गर्छौ कि अनुदान प्राप्त गर्ने महानुभावहरुले हामीलाई निम्न कुराहरुबारे अझै गहिराईमा पुगेर बुझ्न सहयोग गर्नुहुनेछः

१. हाम्रो अहिलेको गाँउ र शहरमा रहेका स्वास्थ्य सेवा पूर्वाधारका क्षमता र अप्ठेरा परिस्थिति
२. संघीय तथा स्थानीय सरकारका कठिनाई र अवसरहरु
३. कृषि तथा कृषकहरुको भूमिका
४. कोभिड १९ ले खाद्य सुरक्षा, उर्जा र जलवायु परिवर्तनमा पारेका प्रभावहरु
५. महामारीले बसाईसराई र रेमिट्यान्समा पारेको असर
६. अनौपचारिक आर्थिक मामिलाको बुझाईमा हाम्रो कमी कमजोरी वा निर्भरता
७. पहिचान, लैगिंक, वर्ग, जात, क्षमता एकआपसमा बाँझिन्छन् र त्यसले जोखिमहरु कसरी बढाउँछ
८. महामारीको परिणामस्वरुप कसरी नौलो समाधानहरु निस्कन्छन्

अनुदानको विवरण र मापदण्ड

१. प्रत्येक अनुदान रकम कर काटेर रु ५०,००० को हुनेछ ।
२. अनुदानको अवधि २ महिनाको हुनेछ । अनुदान २ चरणमा प्रदान गरिनेछ ।
३. अनुदान प्राप्त गरेका महानुभावहरुले हरेक हप्ता ३ देखि ५ वटा तस्वीर र २ महिनाभित्रमा ३ देखि ५ वटा दृश्य कथाहरु बुझाउनुपर्नेछ । साथै हरेक तस्वीरमा नेपाली वा अंग्रेजीमा वर्णनात्मक तरिकाले क्याप्सन लेख्नुपर्नेछ ।
४. अनुदान प्राप्त गरेका व्यक्तिले आफ्नो कामको पूर्ण प्रतिलिपि अधिकार प्राप्त गर्नेछन् । फोटो सर्कलले ती सामाग्रीहरुको अनुदान प्राप्त व्यक्तिलाई पूर्णरुपमा क्रेडिट दिएर अनलाईन वा प्रिन्ट माध्यमबाट सम्बन्धित प्रोजेक्टहरुमा प्रकाशन गर्नको लागि गैर अनन्य अधिकार उपयोग गर्नेछ ।
५. अन्य मिडिया आउटलेटहरुमा ती सामाग्रीहरु प्रकाशन गर्नको लागि फोटो सर्कलले अनुदान प्राप्त व्यक्तिहरुलाई सहयोग गर्नेछ ।
६. फोटो सर्कलले अनुसन्धान र सम्पादकीय सहयोग प्रदान गर्नेछ ।
७. अनुदान प्राप्त व्यक्तिहरुलाइ कोभिड १९ विमाको समेत ब्यवस्था छ । फोटो सर्कलले कामको दौरान सुरक्षित रहनको लागि सहयोग पनि गर्नेछ ।
८. अनुदान प्राप्त व्यक्तिहरु आफ्नो सुरक्षाको जिम्मेवारी आँफै हुनेछन्।
९. नेपालमा स्थाईरुपमा बस्ने नेपालि नागरिकहरु मात्र यस अनुदानका लागि योग्य हुनुहुनेछ।

सम्पादकीय सहयोग समूह

अनुदान प्राप्त गरेका व्यक्तिहरुले निम्न संलग्न सम्पादकीय टिमसँग मिलेर काम गर्नेछन् ।

बुनु ढुंगानाले आफ्नो शिक्षा र अनुसन्धानको क्षेत्र छोडेपछि मात्रै फोटोग्राफीको क्षेत्रमा आउनुभयो। तर समाजशास्त्रमा रहेको उहाँको पृष्ठभूमिले फोटोग्राफीको कामको लागि सहयोग गरेको छ। तर उहाँको व्यक्तिगत परियोजनाहरु महिलाहरुको मुद्धाको आसपास छ । उहाँले भिजुवल एथनोग्राफी, सरकारी तथा गैरसरकारी संस्था, तथा व्यवसायिक एवं पत्रकारिताका बिभिन्न क्षेत्रमा पनि संलग्न भएर काम गरिसक्नुभएको छ । बुनु धेरै भन्दा धेरै मानिसहरुसम्म पुग्न, उनीहरुलाई संलग्न गराउन तथा कुराकानीको सुरुवात गराउनको लागि दृश्य कथा हरु निकै नै उपयुक्त हुने विश्वास राख्नुहुन्छ । उहाँ हाल फोटो सर्कल र नेपाल पिक्चर लाईव्रेरीसँग काम गरिरहनभएको छ ।

मल्लिका अर्याल स्वतन्त्र मल्टिमिडिया पत्रकार, सम्पादक तथा तथा ओस्लो, नर्वेमा आधारित एक प्रशिक्षक हुनुहुन्छ । मल्लिकाका काम मुख्यतयाः सामाजिक काम, असमानता, मिडिया, मानव अधिकार, पहिचान र समावेशीकरणमा केन्द्रित छ । उहाँले १७ बर्षकै उमेरमा पत्रकारको रुपमा काम सुरु गर्दै, नेपालको जनयुद्ध, देशको परिवर्तन (संक्रमण), वासिन्टन डिसिमै रहेर अमेरिकी राष्ट्रपतिको चुनाव र २०१५ मा नेपालको भुकम्पसम्बन्धी बिषयहरुमा अग्रपंक्तिमा रहेर काम गर्नुभएको थियो । अर्यालले दक्षिण एसिया, युएस र नर्वेमा पत्रकारलाई अध्यापन पनि गराउनुभएको थियो । डकुमेन्टरी फिल्ममेकरको रुपमा प्रशिक्षित, उहाँले साउथएसिएन डकुमेन्टरी फेस्टिभलको दौरान फिल्म साउथएसियाको सह निर्देशकको रुपमा पनि काम गरिसक्नुभएको छ ।

नयनतारा गुरुङ्ग कक्षपति दृश्य कथा, अनुसन्धान, शिक्षणशास्त्र तथा सामुहिक कार्यहरुमा एकदमै चासो लिएर काम गरिरहनुभएको छ । सन् २००७ मा उहाँले फोटो सर्कल को सह स्थापना गर्नुभएको थियो, जसले नेपाली फोटोग्राफरहरुको लागि उनीहरुलाई सिक्न, फोटो प्रदशनी गर्न र प्रकाशनको अवसरहरुको खोजी गर्ने एक मंचको रुपमा काम गर्छ र एकदमै अंतर अनुशासनात्मक तरिकाले काम गर्दछ । सन् २०११ मा उहाँले नेपाल पिक्चर लाईव्रेरीको सह स्थापना गर्नुभयो जसले नेपाली सामाजिक र सांस्कृतिक ईतिहासमा विविधताको लागि काम गर्दै डिजिटल अभिलेखालयको रुपमा काम गर्छ । नयनतारा फोटो काठमान्डौका सह संस्थापक तथा महोत्सवको निर्देशक पनि हुनुहुन्छ । जो हरेक दुई वर्षमा काठमाडौँमा हुने अन्तराष्ट्रिरय फोटो महोत्सव हो ।

निशा राईले पत्रकारको रुपमा नेपाली मिडियामा लामो समयसम्म काम गर्नुभएको छ । उहाँ अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय मिडियाहरुमा मल्टिमिडिया पत्रकारका रुपमा काम गरिहनुभएको छ । उहाँसँग छापा माध्यम, अनलाईन, रेडियो तथा टेलिभिजनमा लामो समय काम गरेको राम्रो अनुभव छ । निशासँग २०७२ सालको भूकम्प ताका बीबीसी मिडिया एक्सनको मिलिजुली नेपाली र बीबीसीकै साझा सवाल कार्यक्रमको प्रोड्युसर भएर काम गरेको अनुभव छ । मानिसहरुका कथालाई कारुणिक, यथार्थपरक र तत्काल रचनात्मक र नवीन तरिकाले प्रस्तुत गर्न सक्ने उहाँको राम्रो क्षमता छ । निशा बिशेषतः मान्छेका कथाहरु, संस्कृति, लैगिक समानता, सामाजिक समावेशीकरण, संघीयता र समाजमा रुचि राख्नुहुन्छ ।

सागर क्षेत्री काठमान्डौ केन्द्रित नेपाली फोटोग्राफर हुनुहुन्छ । उहाँ आफ्नो तस्वीरहरुको माध्यमबाट पहिचानको राजनीति, न्याय र प्रतिनिधित्वलाई खोजी गर्नुहुन्छ । सन् २०१८ मा उहाँले आफ्नो काम ईक्लिप्सको लागि म्याग्नम फाउन्डेसन फन्ड प्राप्त गर्नुभएको थियो । सागर साउथ एसिया ईन्स्टिट्युट, हावर्ड विश्वविद्यालयको लािग सन् २०१९,२० को भिजिटिंग आर्टिस्ट फेलो पनि हुनुहुन्थ्यो । हाल उहाँ फोटो सर्कलका लागि शिक्षामा पहल लिने सम्पूर्ण कार्यहरुको संयोजकको रुपमा काम गरिरहनुभएको छ र फोटो काठमान्डौ टिमको एक सदस्य पनि हुनुहुन्छ । साथै उहाँ आफ्नो व्यक्तिगत फोटो परियोजनासँग पनि सम्बन्धित रही काम गरिरहनुभएको छ ।

आवेदन प्रक्रिया

आवेदनका लागि निम्नलिखित सामाग्रीहरु हामीलाई पठाउनुहोला ।

१. न्युनतम १० वटा तस्वीरसहितको एउटा पोर्टफोलियो अथवा २ देखि ३ वटा छोटो भिडियो आफ्नो मल्टिमिडया कार्यहरु अथवा पोडकास्टको लिंक अथवा आफ्ना नेपाली वा अंग्रेजीमा प्रकाशित लेखहरुको लिंक। तपाईले पठाएको सामाग्रीले तपाईले कथा भन्न सक्नुहुन्छ भन्ने कुरा प्रस्ट देखाउनुपर्नेछ ।
२. आवेदकको छोटो बायो २०० शब्द नबढाई र अनुहार प्रष्ट देखिने फोटो ।

PHOTO CIRCLE GRANTS 2020

How can in-depth storytelling help us understand the social, economic, and other immediate as well as long term impacts of the currently unfolding pandemic on our communities across Nepal? What are we seeing and what are we not seeing? How will we remember these times? How can a deeper understanding help us think forward?

 

photo.circle is pleased to announce 10 small grants to support Nepali photographers, journalists and multimedia storytellers based across Nepal to document and tell in-depth stories about the COVID-19 impact and responses. In addition to financial support, grant recipients will be provided with research and editorial support and encouraged to collaborate with experts in the fields of agriculture, public health, education, among others. Grant recipients will receive support to publish content through Nepal Photo Project, a visual reportage platform run by photo.circle, as well as other local partner media outlets.

Key themes that we hope grantees will explore to give us a better understanding of:

  • The capacities and gaps in our current rural and urban health infrastructure
  • The challenges and rewards of federalism and local governance
  • Agriculture and the role of farmers
  • The impact of COVID-19 on food security, energy & climate change
  • The influence of the pandemic on migration and remittance
  • Our dependence and lack of acknowledgement of informal economies
  • Identity, gender, class, caste, ability and how they intersect/and increase vulnerabilities
  • Innovative solutions, community responses as a result of the pandemic

Grant Details and Criteria

  • Each grant is worth NRs. 50,000 after taxes.
  • The grant period will be for two months. Grants will be administered in two-three cycles.
  • Grantees will be required to submit a minimum of 3-5 images per week and 3-5 visual stories within the two-month period. All photos will require descriptive captions in either Nepali or English.
  • Grantees will retain full copyrights to their work. photo.circle will retain non-exclusive usage rights to publish and exhibit works online and in print for related projects with full credit information.
  • photo.circle will support grantees to get work published in other media outlets. Any payment that media provides will be directed to grantee directly.
  • photo.circle will provide additional editorial and research support.
  • Grant will include a Covid-19 insurance coverage. photo.circle will work closely with grantees to best prepare them for personal safety as well as the safety of the communities they are interacting with.
  • Grantees are responsible for their own personal safety.
  • These grants are open for Nepalis residing in Nepal only

Editorial Support Team

Grantees will work closely with an editorial support team comprised of:

Bunu Dhungana discovered photography after leaving the world of academics and research. However, her background in sociology informs her photographic work. While her personal projects centre around women’s issues, she has worked within a wide range – from visual ethnography, NGO/INGO work to commercial and journalistic work. Bunu believes that visual stories can reach out to people, to engage them, and to start conversations. She is currently working with photo.circle and Nepal Picture Library.

Mallika Aryal is a Nepali freelance multimedia journalist, editor, and trainer based in Oslo. Mallika’s work focuses on social justice, inequality, media, human rights, identity, and inclusion. She started as a cub reporter at 17 and has produced stories from the frontlines during Nepal’s civil war, the country’s transition, the US presidential elections from Washington D.C., and the 2015 Nepal earthquakes. Mallika has also taught journalists in Southasia, the US, and Norway. Trained as a documentary filmmaker, she is the former co-director of Film Southasia, a festival of Southasian documentaries.

NayanTara Gurung Kakshapati works at the intersections of visual storytelling, research, pedagogy, and collective action. In 2007, she co-founded photo.circle; a platform that facilitates learning, exhibition-making, and publishing opportunities for Nepali photographers that are working in increasingly trans-disciplinary ways. In 2011, she co-founded Nepal Picture Library; a digital archiving initiative that works towards diversifying Nepali social and cultural history. NayanTara is also the co-founder and festival director of Photo Kathmandu, an international festival that takes place in Kathmandu every two years.

Nisha Rai has a decade-long experience working as a print, online and radio reporter in Nepali and international media. She worked as a researcher and producer for BBC Media Action Nepal’s programs Sajha Sawal and Milijuli Nepal. Nisha is widely respected for her integrity, compelling prose, and storytelling. Creativity and novelty are hallmarks of her work. Her work focuses on presenting people’s stories with compassion, accuracy, and urgency. Nisha is particularly interested in gender equality & social inclusion, federalism, and society.

Sagar Chhetri is a Kathmandu based Nepali photographer. He explores the politics of identity, justice, and representation in his work. In 2018 he received the Magnum Foundation Fund for his work “Eclipse”. Sagari was a visiting artist fellow 2019-2020 at the South Asia Institute, Harvard University. Currently, he is the coordinator for all the education initiatives at photo.circle, and is a part of the Photo Kathmandu team. He also continues working on his personal photography projects.

Application Procedure

To apply, please submit:

  1. A portfolio of minimum 10 images or 2-3 short videos/multimedia work or link to podcast or link to published articles in English or Nepali. Work samples should represent your interest in and ability to tell stories.
  2. A short bio (max 200 words) and a simple headshot of the applicant.
  3. 2-3 story ideas (optional)
