Jal, Jungle, Jameen: Common Futures Fellowship 2026
photo.circle in collaboration with Indigenous without Borders (IwB) invites applications for a new fellowship program — a 3-month program pairing lens-based practitioners with writers and researchers to document stories of “development” and “progress” as inextricably interlinked with the commons.
The fellowship program will support 5 teams of two-member each;
- one lens-based practitioner (photographer, filmmaker, or multimedia artist), and
- one researcher or writer
The fellowship invites teams to explore what bikas (development) and samriddhi (progress) mean for communities in Nepal — especially those whose experiences are often left out. This could mean looking at land and displacement, indigenous knowledge, sovereignty, or community-led ideas of belonging and progress. We also encourage fellows to sketch an outline of a common future, shared by humans and nature alike, as underlined by ideas of dignity and justice, among others.
Each team will produce one case study — a completed text and visual project — by the end of the fellowship program. The form and format for the projects are flexible and can be discussed and decided together with the editorial teams.
The dissemination of the final works will be decided as the fellowship progresses together in close co-ordination with the teams of photo.circle and IwB.
Fellowship offers:
- A production grant Rs. 3 Lakhs (after tax) per team (Rs. 1.5 Lakhs to each member) to support research, travel, and production costs. 60% of the grant will be disbursed in the first month, 30% of the grant will be disbursed in the second month, and the final 10% will be disbursed upon submission of the work.
- Editorial mentorship and guidance from the photo.circle and IWB editorial teams throughout the fellowship period.
- Regular feedback sessions and structured check-ins to support the development of the work.
- Opportunities for publication and wider dissemination of the completed case studies.
Who can apply?
- The fellowship is open to lens-based practitioners (primarily photographers and filmmakers) and researchers/writers based in Nepal.
- You can also apply as a team (one lens-based practitioner + one researcher/writer per team). Teams with a prior or ongoing working relationship, or with a clearly defined collaborative approach, are welcome.
- You can also apply as an individual and will be paired with someone by the organizers.
- The lens-based practitioner on each team should have demonstrated experience in photography, documentary filmmaking, or multimedia practice
- The researcher/writer should have a background in research, journalism, writing, or a related field
- This fellowship is open for Nepali practitioners based in Nepal only.

- A short bio (max. 150 words)
If applying as an individual researcher/writer:
- An updated CV
- A writing sample or links to published work. Writing samples may include essays (academic or popular), journalism, reported features, or similar work — in English and/or Nepali. (max. 2 pieces)
- A short bio (max. 150 words)
If applying as a team:
- A brief team statement (max. 200 words) describing your working relationship and why you are applying together
- Updated CVs of both members

जल, जंगल, जमिनः साझा भविष्य फेलोसिप २०८३
फोटो.सर्कलले इन्डिजिनस विथआउट बोर्डर्स (IwB) सँगको सहकार्यमा एक नयाँ फेलोसिप कार्यक्रमका लागि आवेदन खुला गरेको छ। ३ महिनाको अवधि रहेको यस फेलोसिपले फोटो/भिडियो जस्ता श्रव्यदृश्य–कथाहरूमार्फत काम गर्ने सिर्जनाकर्मी र लेखक तथा अनुसन्धानकर्ताहरूसँगको सहकार्यबाट विकास र समृद्धिका खोजमुलक कथाहरू अभिलेख, सम्पादन, एवं प्रस्तुत गर्ने अवसर सिर्जना गर्नेछ ।
यस फेलोसिप दुई-दुई जनाको पाँच जोडीलाई प्रदान गरिनेछ ।
प्रत्येक टोलीमा:
- एक जना क्यामेरामा आधारित भई काम गर्ने फोटोग्राफर वा फिल्ममेकर
- एक जना अनुसन्धानकर्ता/अध्येता वा लेखक रहनेछन् ।
यस फेलोसिपले मूलधारका कथा तथा दस्तावेजीकरणमा प्रायः ओझेलमा परेका समुदायहरूको दृष्टिकोणबाट नेपालको विकास र समृद्धिको अर्थ के हो भन्ने विषयमा अन्वेषण गर्न आमन्त्रण गर्दछ। यसमा सहभागी फेलोहरुले भूमि र विस्थापन, आदिवासी ज्ञान, स्वायत्तता, अपनत्व, तथा प्रगति र समृद्धिबारे समुदायमा आधारित अवधारणाका विषयहरू समेटेर खोज तथा अध्ययन गर्नेछन्।
प्रत्येक टोलीले फेलोसिपको अन्त्यसम्ममा लेख र फोटो/भिडियो दुवै समावेश भएको एक पुरा काम तयार गर्नुपर्नेछ। उक्त कामको स्वरूप र ढाँचा सम्पादकीय टोलीसँग छलफल गरेर तय गर्न सकिनेछ।
फेलोसिपले प्रदान गर्ने सुविधा
- अध्ययन–अनुसन्धान, यात्रा तथा कथा निर्माण खर्चका लागि रु. ३ लाख (प्रत्येक सदस्यलाई रु. १ लाख पचास हजार) तीन किस्तामा– पहिलो महिनामा ६०%, दोस्रो महिनामा ३०% र काम सम्पन्न भएपछि १०% रकम उपलब्ध गरिनेछ ।
- फेलोसिप अवधिभर फोटो.सर्कल र इन्डिजिनस विथआउट बोर्डर्स (IwB) का सम्पादकीय टोलीबाट अनुसन्धान तथा सम्पादकीय मार्गदर्शन तथा मेन्टरसिप प्रदान गरिनेछ।
- फेलोहरुले बनाइरहेको रहेको कामलाई अझ प्रभावकारी बनाउन विषय-केन्द्रित नियमित विचार-बिमर्श र छलफलहरू सञ्चालन गरिनेछ।
- काम प्रकाशन तथा प्रचारका अवसरहरू उपलब्ध गरिनेछ ।
कसले आवेदन दिन सक्छ?
- यो फेलोसिप नेपालमै बस्ने नेपाली फोटोग्राफर, फिल्ममेकर, तथा अनुसन्धानकर्ता/लेखकहरूका लागि आह्वान गरिएको हो ।
- व्यक्तिगत क्यामेरामा-आधारित अभ्यासकर्ताहरुले (फोटोग्राफर वा फिल्ममेकर)।
- व्यक्तिगत अनुसन्धानकर्ता/लेखकहरुले।
- सहकार्य गर्दै आएको दुई जनाले (एक जना फोटोग्राफर वा फिल्ममेकर + एक जना अनुसन्धानकर्ता वा लेखक) एक टोलीको रूपमा पनि आवेदन दिन सकिन्छ ।
नोट : व्यक्तिगत रूपमा आवेदन दिएको खण्डमा फेलोसिप आह्वानकर्ता संस्थाले तपाईंलाई उपयुक्त सहकर्मी चयन गरी जोडी बनाइदिनेछन् ।
