photo.circle is hosting a four-day symposium titled Reimagining Museums in Nepal with the hope of facilitating an open forum for individuals, groups and institutions interested and involved in making, running and engaging with museums The symposium will be a time and space to discuss the role and function of museums in present day Nepali society, what stories and histories they include and exclude, what purpose they are meant to serve and who they are meant to speak to. The symposium will contemplate alternative propositions for museum-making and possibilities of reimagining the function, relevance and futures of museums.
The symposium is held in conjunction with the exhibition “The Sovereign Forest” by New Delhi-based artist Amar Kanwar in collaboration with Sudhir Pattnaik / Samadrusti and Sherna Dastur. Amar Kanwar and Sudhir Pattnaik will both present at the symposium and speak on how we might see The Sovereign Forest as a way of understanding and remembering, and on the people’s resistance movements in Odisha, respectively.
The symposium will also host a one-day convening of collectors during which we will meet with various individuals and groups building collections. Why do we collect things? What is the psychology of collecting practices and how can we understand them in relation to identity, culture, history and knowledge keeping? The day-long convention will be open to the public.
This symposium is open to 40 participants only. Participants will be invited after an application process.

संग्रहालय निर्माण र सञ्चालन गर्न तथा संग्रहालयसँग सहकार्य गर्न इच्छुक व्यक्ति, समूह र संस्थाहरूलाई खुला मञ्च उपलब्ध गराउने आकंक्षासहित फोटोसर्कलले कसको र कस्तो संग्रहालय नामक चार दिने गोष्ठी आयोजना गर्दैछ। यो गोष्ठी वर्तमान नेपाली समाजमा संग्रहालयहरूको भूमिका र काम, तिनले कस्ता भाष्य र इतिहासलाई समावेश वा बहिष्कृत गर्छन्, कस्ता उद्देश्य पूर्ति गर्न स्थापना गरिएका हुन् र कसप्रति सम्बोधित छन् आदि विषयबारे छलफल गर्ने समय तथा स्थान हुनेछ । गोष्ठीले सङ्ग्रहालय परिकल्पनाका वैकल्पिक प्रस्ताव तथा सङ्ग्रहालयहरूको काम, सान्दर्भिकता र भविष्यबारे पुनर्कल्पना गर्ने सम्भावनाहरूबारे मन्थन गर्नेछ ।
यो गोष्ठी नयाँ दिल्लीका कलाकार अमर कन्वरको प्रदर्शनी सार्वभौम वन सँगको संयोजनमा आयोजना गरिएको छ । सार्वभौम वनले अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय खनिज उत्खनन कम्पनीहरूले राज्यको समर्थनसहित गरेका भूमि कब्जाविरुद्ध ओडिशाका जनताको संघर्षलाई स्मारक बनाउने उद्देश्य राखेको छ । अमर तथा उनका सहकर्मी सुधीर पटनायक दुवैले गोष्ठीमा प्रस्तुति राख्नेछन् ।
सुधीर पटनायकले ओडीशाका नागरिकहरूको प्रतिरोध आन्दोलनका बारे बोल्नेछन् भने अमर कन्वरले आफूले कसरी यस प्रदर्शनीलाई सामुदायिक सङ्ग्रहालय निर्माणका प्रस्तावको रूपमा हेरेको छु भन्ने बारेमा बोल्नेछन्। गोष्ठीले संकलनकर्ताहरुको एकदिने सम्मेलन पनि आयोजना गर्नेछ जसअन्तर्गत हामीले विभिन्न व्यक्तिहरू र समूह निर्माण संकलनहरूसँग भेटघाट गर्नेछौँ । हामी किन सामग्री संकलन गर्छौँ ? संकलन अभ्यासका मनोवैज्ञानिक पाटो के हुन् र पहिचान, संस्कृति, इतिहास र ज्ञानसंग्रहको सम्बन्धमा हामीले तिनलाई कसरी बुझ्न सक्छौँ ? यो एकदिने सम्मेलन सार्वजनिक रहनेछ ।
