PRESENTER
Scott Faiia
Scott Faiia Scott has lived and worked in Asia for more than 20 years, in East Africa for nine years, in the Caribbean for three years and in Egypt for three years. His serious interest in photography developed as a means to interact with the diverse people and cultures he encountered in his work. In many ways this interaction, and the possibility of capturing through photography the hope and beauty he encountered, was a counterbalance to the grim realities he grappled with in his relief and development work. After a ten year absence Scott returned to Nepal in 2008 to focus his energies on photographing the wonders of life in the Kathmandu Valley.

PRESENTATIONS
Then and Now
Nepal has experienced dramatic change in the past few decades and the pace of change exceeds that of any other time in history. Photography is a superb tool to document such change and raise awareness concerning both negative and positive aspects of it. Unbridled development and historical restorations are two such contrasting elements. Images of people also illustrate the passing of time, in some cases with remarkable stability. The sets of comparative images presented cover the period from 1988 to 2009. For example, the Kumbeshwar water tap (images 7 and 8) had an ample flow of water and many traditional brass water containers in 1992, while in 2009 there was no water. In contrast, the situation of the Bhaktapur fruit vendor (images 9 and 10) has hardly changed over the same time period.

The Art of Balancing
All his adult life Scott has worked to assist people in situations of extreme poverty, war, famine and natural disasters. Yet, in all these situations he has found elements of beauty and hope to balance the despair and suffering he has encountered. Recognizing and documenting the beauty and hope through his photography has enabled Scott to maintain his own inner personal balance through the years. These images from Ethiopia and Egypt were part of his survival toolkit to live a balanced life.
